Researchers across Taiwan are working to overcome complex challenges in AI development, climate science, and quantum computing. Their efforts are about to receive a significant boost with the introduction of a new supercomputer at Taiwan's National Center for High-Performance Computing (NCHC). The announcement was made by Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang at Computex 2025 in Taipei.

The AI supercomputer at NCHC is designed to deliver significantly more performance than the center's earlier Taiwania 2 system, with over eight times the AI processing power. The system will feature Nvidia HGX H200 systems with over 1,700 GPUs, two Nvidia GB200 NVL72 rack-scale systems, and an Nvidia HGX B300 system built on the Nvidia Blackwell Ultra platform, all interconnected by Nvidia Quantum InfiniBand networking.

The new system is expected to go live later this year and will be accessible to researchers from academic institutions, government agencies, and small businesses in Taiwan. This will enable them to accelerate innovative projects and unlock new potential in a range of fields.

Developing Local Language Models for Sovereign AI

The new supercomputer will enable researchers to develop local language models for sovereign AI, which is critical for Taiwan's digital sovereignty. Sovereign AI refers to AI systems that are designed and developed within a country's borders, without relying on foreign technology or data. Developing local language models will be a key part of this effort, as it will enable Taiwanese AI systems to better understand and respond to the local language and cultural nuances.

Speeding Scientific Research in Climate and Beyond

The new supercomputer will also accelerate scientific research in climate science and beyond. Climate research requires massive amounts of data processing and simulation, which the new system will be able to handle with ease. This will enable researchers to model complex climate phenomena, such as weather patterns and sea-level rise, with greater accuracy and speed. The system will also be able to support research in other fields, such as materials science, biomedicine, and cryptography.
