Netherlands' Phishing Sites Stay Online for 23 Hours on Average

By Netvora Tech News

The Dutch foundation that manages the .nl domain registry, SIDN, has reported that phishing sites in the .nl zone remain online for an average of 23 hours. This is according to the organization's latest annual report, released today. The average lifespan of phishing sites and malware-spreading websites has decreased slightly, from 25 hours to 23 hours, compared to the previous year.

SIDN's efforts to combat malicious registrations or domains have resulted in a high success rate. The organization sends notifications to affected registrars, hosting parties, and domain holders, who then take action to resolve the issue. Last year, registrars removed nearly 60% of phishing and malware sites within 24 hours of receiving SIDN's notifications.

In approximately 400 cases, SIDN took direct action and made the domain name and website inaccessible. In November alone, the organization removed over 125 domains from a malicious holder. Before taking this step, SIDN conducts thorough research in every case.

The .nl zone currently counts almost 6.2 million domain names.

Phishing Sites Remain a Persistent Threat

Phishing sites remain a significant threat to internet users, with hackers using them to spread malware and steal sensitive information. SIDN's efforts to combat these sites are crucial in protecting the online security of Dutch citizens and businesses.
