Revolutionizing Healthcare: AI-Powered Assistant Boosts Clinician and Patient Satisfaction

By Netvora Tech News

The Canadian healthcare system has long struggled with clinician and patient satisfaction, with patients often facing difficulty accessing care and clinicians overwhelmed by their workload. The Ottawa Hospital (TOH) has made significant strides in addressing this issue by integrating Microsoft's DAX Copilot, an AI-powered assistant designed to streamline clinical workflows. Early results from the pilot program are impressive, with clinicians reporting a 70% reduction in burnout and fatigue, and patients experiencing a better or equivalent care experience in 93% of cases. The integration of DAX Copilot has also resulted in a seven-minute reduction in encounter time per patient. "The biggest issue patients face is access to care," notes Glen Kearns, EVP and CIO of TOH. "By improving throughput, even a couple of patients per physician per shift, we can see a significant increase in access to care." TOH was the first Canadian hospital to pilot Microsoft's DAX Copilot, which is seamlessly integrated with the widely used electronic health record (EHR) platform Epic. In March, Microsoft bundled DAX Copilot with Dragon Medical One (DMO) into the embedded AI assistant Microsoft Dragon Copilot, which is now used by over 600,000 physicians.

Ambient AI as an Active Assistant

DAX Copilot's ambient AI technology allows it to learn and adapt to a clinician's workflow, providing personalized suggestions and guidance to streamline clinical tasks. By automating routine and administrative tasks, clinicians can focus on what matters most – providing high-quality patient care.

How TOH is Improving Visits and Reducing Physician Burnout

The integration of DAX Copilot has had a significant impact on TOH's clinical workflows, allowing clinicians to prioritize patient care and reduce administrative burdens. By automating tasks such as documentation and data entry, clinicians can focus on more complex and high-value tasks, leading to improved patient outcomes and reduced burnout.
