Firefox Struggles to Import Chrome Passwords Due to New Security Measure
By Netvora Tech News
Mozilla's Firefox browser is facing an uphill battle in importing Chrome passwords, thanks to a new security measure introduced by Google. The "Device Bound Session Credentials" (DBSC) feature, which is designed to prevent cookie theft by malware, is making it more challenging for Firefox users to transfer their Chrome passwords and login data. DBSC is aimed at combating malware that steals session cookies, which grant an attacker instant access to a user's account, eliminating the need to crack passwords or bypass two-factor authentication. According to Google, many internet users are infected with malware that steals these cookies, which are created after a user logs in. Mozilla's Anna Kulyk praises DBSC as a great way to protect user data from malware. However, she notes that it makes it extremely difficult for Firefox to automatically import locally stored data, such as login credentials and payment methods. Currently, Firefox users are forced to export their Chrome passwords to a CSV file and then import it manually. Mozilla is working on patches to enable users to import passwords manually, but is also exploring alternative options. This added hurdle may deter some users from switching from Chrome to Firefox, making the transition more difficult than it needs to be.
