Email Provider Proton Mail Blocked in India
By Netvora Tech News
A court in India has ordered the government to block access to email provider Proton Mail, following a complaint from a local company. The firm claims that employees received obscene messages sent via Proton Mail, and despite reporting the issue to the police, the provider refused to share information about the sender.
According to reports, the company filed a complaint with the court, which has now ordered the government to block Proton Mail in the country. The block has not yet taken effect, but the decision comes after a similar request was made by the Indian police last year. At the time, a fake bomb threat was sent to at least 13 schools via Proton Mail, prompting the police to ask the government to block the service.
Controversy Surrounds Blockade
Proton Mail had previously criticized the proposed blockade, calling it an ineffective and inappropriate response to the reported threats. A spokesperson said that blocking access to Proton Mail would not prevent cybercriminals from sending threats via other email services, and would also be ineffective if the perpetrators were based outside of India.
- The Swiss government has since contacted Indian authorities to prevent the blockade.
- Proton Mail has not yet commented on the latest court ruling.
The controversy surrounding Proton Mail's blockade highlights the ongoing challenges faced by governments and law enforcement agencies in combating cybercrime and online threats.
