The Dutch government has taken a significant step to improve job satisfaction and reduce workload among civil servants by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI). In a brief to the parliament, State Secretary for Digitalization Szabo announced that the government has implemented a motion to develop guidelines for safe and relevant AI applications that can reduce workload and enhance job satisfaction. The motion, which was passed with 144 votes in favor and six against, was tabled by the government in response to a request from the Second Chamber. Only the Party for Animals and the Freedom Party voted against the motion. Szabo noted that the government had already published a handbook on generative AI in April, featuring examples of AI applications that can contribute to enhancing job satisfaction and addressing government tasks. To further explore the potential of AI, the government has organized three sessions with public officials to map ongoing initiatives that can contribute to job satisfaction or workload reduction. The sessions aimed to identify needs and explore the possibilities of AI applications in the public sector. Szabo emphasized that AI is already being successfully applied in various areas within the government. "In some areas, AI has been used in the government for a longer period, and many different initiatives and experiments have been started in recent years," he said. "These often involve AI applications that simplify and streamline work processes, often focusing on AI assistants." Szabo noted that AI can help reduce repetitive tasks and workload, and also contribute to job satisfaction by providing time savings and valuable additions to the work environment of civil servants. He cited examples of AI chatbots that make internal government information more easily accessible, AI applications used for metadata extraction, or AI applications used as support in procedures such as complaints handling or social security claims. "Many of these AI applications have significant potential for added value for government organizations," Szabo concluded, adding that the motion has been fulfilled with the publication of the handbook and the actions taken.
