SIDN Abandons Plan to Build New Domain Registration System The Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland (SIDN), the organization responsible for managing the .nl domain, has concluded that building a new system for registering and relocating domain names is no longer a viable option. In 2023, SIDN announced its plans to migrate to a new registration platform developed in collaboration with the Canadian Internet Registration Authority (CIRA), responsible for the .ca domain. SIDN's current registration system, DRS5, is due for replacement. This system was developed by SIDN itself, succeeding DRS4. The organization has explored various options, including using an open-source system, purchasing an existing system, or partnering with one or more registry operators based on an existing system. Ultimately, the decision was made to collaborate with another registry. "Like many other registries, we face significant challenges, such as increasingly sophisticated cybersecurity threats, higher quality and continuity requirements, growing complexity, and increasing costs of core IT services," said SIDN CEO Roelof Meijer. "Coupled with our conclusion that building a system only for our own use is no longer a viable option, this led us to choose collaboration with another registry." Meijer emphasized that, despite being the world's fourth-largest country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), managing all cyber risks and meeting the demands of SIDN's registration system is a significant challenge. He noted that the global trend of stagnant growth also affects .nl, while SIDN's costs continue to rise. "For smaller ccTLDs, this poses an even greater challenge," he added.
